The AFC U-23 Championship in Thailand, which will determine three spots, will start on Wednesday and continue through Sunday, January 26th
The CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament in Colombia, which will determine two spots, will start on Saturday, January 18th and run through the first nine days of next month
The final two spots will be determined by the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship, which will start on March 20th and conclude on April 1st

As part of the fallout from the Sochi doping case, Russian athletes will most likely not be allowed to compete in both the Tokyo games and the 2022 World Cup under the Russian flag. However, this might not be the case for World Cup qualifying in men's soccer, which will start in September

Japan has qualified as the host nation. Joining them as qualifiers from the FIBA World Cup- Nigeria, Argentina, United States, Iran, France, Spain and Australia. Four spots will still be up for grabs at the FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in June, with one qualifier each from competitions in Victoria, Canada; Split, Croatia; Kaunas, Lithuania; and Belgrade, Serbia
